Clever ideas

We've done some interesting projects already this year. These are a selection of some of the more useful ideas
  1. The Morgue - Document Management. Uses FileMaker Pro and a plugin to archive Word documents which are batch-imported and then searchable. Find any document using any search word.
  2. Charted reports. Straight out of FileMaker Pro 11 we can now build reports that include charts. We've already deployed this in a solution and it is fast and efficient to build and to use. No more exporting to Excel to provide management reports! Make FileMaker do the work for you.
  3. Distributed Solutions. Normally a FileMaker solution sits on a Server or a host computer and all the other users find it there. Recently we've done some work on solutions that have some files on the Server and some on the local computer. There are two really good reasons for doing this; it works better in a wide area network ie for staff working from home and it can be used to let laptop workers work offline and download data when they get back to the office.
  4. Surveys and Interviews. We've done two projects recently using FileMaker as the basis for creating interviews. Both have required high levels of security and confidentiality, downloads to a server and one has a clever function that automatically populates a Job Sheet based on the answers entered on the Interview.
  5. Document/Image Management and Storage using the Webviewer. We've done two flavours of this recently. Basically, we use FileMaker's built-in Webviewer and a separate web-server to upload and store files across a wide-area network (multiple offices). This enables the Solution to handle files more quickly and effectively than the traditional FileMaker container fields.
  6. Importing from Excel. Importing from Excel is old-hat but recently we've done some interesting work on comparing and analysing imported spreadsheets then populating the Solution with the results. FileMaker Pro 11 also includes a useful "recurring Import" function to import the latest version of your favourite spreadsheets every time you open your solution.
